Plan International, AFCSOs advocate empowerment of girls for leadership roles

Plan International Ghana in partnership with the Alliance of Feminist CSOs (AFCSOs), are advocating a collective empowerment mechanisms for young girls to take up leadership positions from the grassroots or lower levels to higher levels.

Mr Ahensah Asum-Kwarteng, the Head of Programmes and Influencing, Plan International Ghana, said report showed that women-led governments performed better in the COVID-19 global response and about 70 per cent of global health workers at the fore front of the COVID-19 fight were women, yet they were often left out of decision making.

Increasing women’s participation at the rural, district, municipal and national levels of decision making, he said, was very valuable. “We need to encourage girls to take leadership roles at schools, communities and district levels right from a tender age to transform mindsets and empower relations,” he said.

Ensure fair representation of women on election petition panel – Feminist CSOs to Chief Justice

The Alliance of Feminist CSOs (AFCSOs) has appealed to Chief Justice to ensure a fair gender representation on the panel of judges to hear the election petition brought before the Supreme Court.

The group says this would be “in alignment to international conventions and best policy norms as enshrined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security of which Ghana firmly upholds in her constitution.”

“The Alliance wishes to call on your esteemed office, and humbly appeal to yourself, His Lordship Justice Anin Yeboah (CJ) via this letter to ensure a fair representation of 50% women on the panel of judges to hear the election petition in the spirit of the constitution of the Republic of Ghana,” it said in a petition.

The Alliance of Feminine Civil Society Organisations (AFCSOs) have lauded former President John D. Mahama’s running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for her decent and decorous politics on her campaign trail.

According to them, her clean and clear message will impact significantly how politics should be done in the country. They said, “Her message so far has been one that encourages peace, encourages party executives and sympathizers to practice politics of no insult, one that advises campaign based on issues and development. 

“This, the Alliance finds encouraging as a way forward to promoting peaceful co-existence and promoting democracy. “
